The Wheel of Life – Relax
Relax methods for adult learners
As part of the Wheel of Life international project for adult learners, we explore key aspects of personal and professional development. In July 2025, our theme was Relax, with a focus on relaxation techniques and discussing and developing passions.
Throughout the month, we explored various practices, tools, and reflections related to relaxation and regeneration. Below, we’ve gathered key insights from this journey—ideas that may inspire adult educators and learners across Europe.
Relaxation is not a luxury—it’s a necessity
Modern life can be fast-paced and demanding. In such an environment, relaxation is often perceived as a luxury or even a waste of time. Yet research confirms that regular rest is essential for learning, productivity, emotional balance, and physical health.
To support our learners in integrating relaxation into daily life, we introduced them to a variety of relaxation methods. We encouraged everyone to explore different strategies and create their own “relaxation toolkit,” depending on their personality, lifestyle, and preferences.
Some of the techniques we shared include:
🧘 Body-based relaxation: stretching, yoga, diaphragmatic breathing, warm showers, or massages.
🧠 Mind-focused relaxation: meditation, affirmations, journaling, or listening to calming music or nature sounds.
🎨 Action-based relaxation: gardening, painting, cooking slowly, crafting, or solving puzzles.
💞 Connection-based relaxation: hugging a loved one, spending time with pets, or engaging in deep conversation.
🌿 “Doing nothing”: taking time with no plans, no devices, no responsibilities—just being.
Nature as a healer
We also focused on the role of nature in fostering relaxation. We invited our learners to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the natural world, even if only for 30 minutes.
Scientific studies consistently show that time in nature:
🌲 Lowers cortisol (the stress hormone)
🌿 Improves mood and emotional resilience
💡 Enhances creativity and concentration
🛡️ Supports immune function
💬 Strengthens our sense of meaning and connection with life
Inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku (“forest bathing”), we invited participants to take mindful walks in parks, forests, meadows, or even among balcony plants—without headphones, phones, or distractions—just present-moment awareness.
Relaxation through purpose – Ikigai
Throughout the journey, we shifted our attention from stillness to meaningful engagement, introducing the Japanese concept of Ikigai—“a reason of being”
Ikigai lies at the intersection of four key areas:
❤️ What you love
💪 What you’re good at
💰 What you can be paid for
🌍 What the world needs
Through a simple yet powerful visual exercise, learners mapped these four areas and reflected on where they overlapped in their own lives. The goal wasn’t necessarily to change careers but to reconnect with sources of meaning—however small—that bring joy and direction.
Passion as a form of deep relaxation
To close the month, we invited learners to explore their passions as a path to relaxation. Contrary to the belief that relaxation always means rest, we discovered that being fully absorbed in something we love—what psychologists call “flow”—can be just as restorative.
We encouraged participants to reflect on questions such as:
* What did I love doing as a child?
* When do I lose track of time?
* What brings me joy even when I’m tired?
* When did I last feel truly engaged?
Learners were then invited to create a “Passion Map”—a list of interests or curiosities to explore, even if they didn’t feel skilled yet. The invitation was simple: choose one and dedicate just 30 minutes to it this week. Not for achievement. Just for joy.

The Wheel of Life project is co-financed by the European Union. Its main objective is to prepare, test and share tools of holistic development for adult learners in 8 key areas:
Family, Relationships, Work, Finances, Relax, Health, Environment, Self-Development.
The Wheel of Life is implemented by two organisations: Fundacja Wyobraź sobie from Poland (leader) and ASPIRA from Slovenia (partner).
